A little gem of a shop set on one of the best blocks in Manhattan, String offers a collection of yarns saturated with so much color and texture you'll be tempted to start knitting three projects at once. And if you're accompanying a knitter, but not one yourself, you'll want to sit down and take lessons right on the spot.

A vision of owner and passionate knitter Linda Morse, String elicits oohs and aahs the moment customers enter the warm and charming space.

More than a source for distinctive, high-quality yarns (excellently priced, by the way) String also shows our own sophisticated designs using our yarns. The collection includes sweaters for women and men, scarves, hats, and bags, as well as babies’ and children’s clothes and accessories.

Customized services further give String its panache. Lidia Karabinech, String's terrifically talented designer, will work closely with you to select the yarn and look for your style and lifestyle. You'll get a custom pattern and help and advice from the first stitch to the last seam. Linda's trained eye and excellent taste are always available to guide your selection.

If you don't have time or desire to knit a special piece on your own, String will do it for you. We also offer trunk shows featuring designers from around the world, creative knitting theme events, and private lessons on subjects from Beginning Knitting all the way up to Finishing. It's all pulled together professionally and stylishly in an intimate, relaxed atmosphere. You won't want to leave!

Meet String's owner, Linda Morse

What happens when an accomplished and sophisticated businesswoman -- who just happens to love to knit -- decides she wants to leave the high-powered world of information technology? If she's Linda Morse, she opens a knitting boutique and runs it with the same verve and passion that defined her high-tech career. Fast turning String into New York City's premier knitting boutique, Linda brings to it her business savvy, fashion flair and complete dedication to her customers.

Linda has been a passionate knitter throughout her entire life, and was never too busy to have a number of projects going at once, even during the busy years of raising children and pursuing her career. Linda held positions at Princeton and Columbia Universities, was part of the leadership team that built American Management Systems into a multi-billion dollar company, and was the CEO of a dot com. She traveled constantly, and used these long airplane flights to finish her knitting projects and shop for new ones. "Knitting is also one of the most effective ways to relieve everyday stress," she believes, "and you have something wonderful to show for it at the same time."

Linda toyed with the idea of opening a knitting store for over 20 years, and she prepared herself well, visiting knitting shops, yarn companies, and designers all over the world. Her pure love of knitting, teamed with her drive, business acumen, and sense of fashion and elegance, makes String the ultimate knitting experience.

Meet In-Store Designer Lidia Karabinech

Lidia moved to New York in 1993 after studying and teaching chemistry for nine years in Eastern Ukraine, her homeland. Pursuing her knitting talents, she oversaw the black label designs of fashion luminaries including Donna Karan and Ellen Tracy. Lidia's original creations are flawless outside -- and in. "If a sweater is a mess on the inside, I don't like it," she says in her charming accent. Lidia teaches knitting at String and writes the custom patterns String creates for its customers.
