An Important Update

Updated 8/24/2020

Dear String Customers,

We want to share with you an update regarding the String Flagship store in NYC.  We have made the very difficult and devastating decision to not reopen String at 74th and Lex in the foreseeable future.  Let us share how we have come to this conclusion.

We have been fighting with our landlord since April.  He has refused to give any concession on rent while most retail tenants in the city were getting some rent relief.  We worked for 4 months to come to an arrangement that would work for both of us but in the end, he refused to compromise.

For a short period of time we did consider moving to a new location.  Stacy found a great spot not far from where the store is currently located.  But as the crisis with Covid-19 and specifically the effect on retail in NYC continued to unfold, we knew moving wasn't viable.  Between breaking our current lease and establishing a new lease, the cost was simply prohibitive.

Lastly, even if we could have figured all of the above out, the space at String is so small and narrow we probably would have only been able to have one or two customers at a time.  That is not a viable model.

We very much hope there will be a point in time when the pandemic crisis has passed, that we can relaunch in NYC.  Closing our current location  has been one of the most difficult decisions we have ever had to make.

We will continue to maintain our on-line presence at www.stringyarns.com.  We will continue to carry our current lines and will be updating the website as new products arrive.  As many of you know, our Store Manager Lisa Hoffman has been working tirelessly from her home on Long Island hosting her Directed Knitting Group several times per week via Zoom, as well as opening new Virtual Knitting group times.  She has also launched multiple KALs, offered beginning crochet classes and a Tuesday night Sip & Knit.  She has done a tremendous job continuing to engage with all of you  as has the rest of the store team.  We will continue these on-line interactions and hope to develop other interesting ways to continue to support all of you.  We have programming scheduled through the fall, opening with Stacy doing Virtual Trunk Shows of the new String and Stacy Charles Fine yarns collections in September.

Stacy will continue to work with us on new product development for all of our brands including String.  New product development for SS21 is woefully behind schedule due to the pandemic and the months that the Italian mills were closed.  We hope to have new products to share with you later this fall.  We have already started receiving FW21 collections from our mill partners and are very excited with what we are seeing.  Our FW20 Collection, Sutton Place is being well received and our two new yarns, Geneva and Tuscany are absolutely gorgeous and are available now on the String website.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns directly to us at info@stringyarns.com.  We can still be reached by phone at our same store phone number 212-288-9276 during customer service hours Monday-Friday 10am-5pm.  Voicemail messages will be returned during those times.

We wish you all good health and hope to see you soon – virtually!

Steve, Kathy & Stacy
